If you own livestock, it's crucial to have a solid plan in place for the safety of your animals. Here are some steps you can take to ensure your farm animals are cared for in the event of an evacuation:Evacuation Plan: Have a clear plan on how and where to evacuate your animals in case of an emergency. Safety comes first!- Visual Identification: Make sure your animals are easily identifiable. This can be achieved through ID tags on each animal and maintaining a file with all ID and ownership records.- Premises Identification Program (PID): Utilize the Alberta Government’s Premises Identification Program (PID) for added security and ease in emergency situations.- Emergency Contact List: Compile a contact list of key individuals you may need to reach out to during emergencies. This should include:- Neighbours who can offer assistance- Livestock handlers for additional support- Veterinary practices for medical emergencies- Feed suppliers to ensure your animals are properly fed.Being prepared is the best defence against emergencies. As Emergency Preparedness Week continues, let's discuss the ABVTA/ABMVA Master List duties further:It is expected that some individuals within an activation will take on leadership roles to oversee defined aspects of incident management. While veterinary professionals will occupy most of their time in an “operational” role, some veterinary professionals will be required to take on a leadership role in theactivation, including planning and oversight of operations. These individuals are referred to as “Team Leads.” Here are a few ways that a Team Lead can contribute during an activation:1. Collaborate with CADRC representatives to select, contact and schedule veterinarians and veterinary technologists.2. Ensure orientation of veterinarians and veterinary technologist and other team leads.3. Assist CADRC with orientation and training of non-veterinary professional volunteers when necessary.4. Liaise with community veterinary practice entities for referral of medical cases as necessary.5. Provide oversight of the processes for admission, triage, treatment and discharge of animals.6. Provide oversight of the triage and treatment of sick or injured animals.7. Provide oversight of the facility regarding animal health, biosecurity and welfare in accordancewith ABVMA Standards as set out in the plan.8. Oversee communication with owners regarding discharge where appropriate.9. Communication with ABVMA and ABVTA CADRC representatives.Further, it is considered ideal that a Team Lead will be a registered veterinarian or veterinary technologist. These individuals should be willing to engage in training in emergency/disaster veterinary medicine on an ongoing or as required basis.
